Kathy Kahn has been at the Union since 1989 and served as the national Director of the Department of Outreach and Membership since 2003. She is now a Congregational Consultant for the URJ as a Membership Specialist with a second specialty in Outreach.
In her more than twenty two years of service to the Union, Ms. Kahn has led programming for synagogue professionals and leadership in the area of membership, paying special attention to the areas of recruitment, engagement and retention. She has developed programming for clergy as well as congregational leadership that supports interfaith families and those in the process of conversion and written many articles on membership, interfaith and conversion issues.
Kathy has edited and contributed to numerous publications, among them the Belin Outreach and Membership Idea Book series, Beyond Shalom and the newly revised and expanded Life Cycle of Synagogue Membership, Defining a Role for the Non-Jew in the Synagogue, the Introduction to Judaism Instructor’s Guide and Curriculum and That You May Live Long: Caring for Our Aging Parents, Caring for Ourselves,and Inside Intermarriage: A Christian Partner’s Perspective on Raising a Jewish Family by Jim Keene, all from the URJ Press.
She has developed and served as faculty for the three URJ-CCAR Rabbi Alexander Schindler Fellows Programs in leadership development for certification in Membership, Conversion and Interfaith Couples/Families; for the annual HUC Gerecht Family Institute On Conversion for all 3rd year student clergy on all 3 HUC-JIR campuses; and the annual HUC Schusterman Institute on Interfaith for 4th year HUC-JIR rabbinic students.
Kathy is the prime mover in the development and implementation of the widely acclaimed national program, “A Taste of Judaism: Are You Curious?” which, since 1994, has welcomed more than 90,000 unaffiliated people to learn about Judaism into Reform synagogues across theU.S. andCanada
Ms. Kahn and her husband Clifford are the proud parents of two daughters, Jessica and Alexandra, and reside in Glen Ridge, New Jersey.
